Background of the Study (200 words)
Men’s roles in advocating for gender equality are increasingly recognized as pivotal in transforming traditional gender dynamics. In Oru West Local Government Area, Imo State, men are emerging as allies and advocates for women’s rights, challenging entrenched patriarchal norms (Nwankwo, 2023). This evolving perspective reflects broader societal shifts where gender equality is viewed as beneficial for all, rather than a zero-sum struggle. Male advocacy in this context includes participation in policy formulation, community education, and support for initiatives that empower women (Ifeoma, 2024). Despite these progressive trends, challenges persist due to resistance from conservative factions and the internalization of traditional gender roles (Uche, 2025). The study examines how men engage in gender equality advocacy, the barriers they encounter, and the impact of their efforts on community attitudes. By analyzing both qualitative narratives and quantitative data, the research highlights the transformative potential of male involvement in promoting social justice (Chima, 2023).
Statement of the Problem (100 words)
In Oru West, while men are increasingly engaging in gender equality advocacy, their efforts are often met with resistance from traditional cultural norms. This tension limits the overall impact of advocacy initiatives and hinders the broader acceptance of gender equality measures (Obi, 2024). The lack of comprehensive studies on men’s roles in this arena creates a gap in understanding how male allies can effectively contribute to social change. This research addresses these challenges and examines the underlying factors that shape male participation in gender equality advocacy (Eze, 2025).
